Our History
La Ruota d’Oro was founded in the second half of the 1960s from an idea by Salvatore Piga, a bar concept that was innovative for its time. Located along the former state road 131, it served in some ways as a rest stop; the name (meaning "The Golden Wheel") stems from the fact that, back then, cyclists competing in the Giro d'Italia and the Giro di Sardegna used to pass right in front of the building.
Over time, it became a landmark for everyone traveling to Cagliari and for hunters who frequented it for breakfast and used it as a meeting point. Throughout the years, it underwent several transformations and expansions, until the early 70s when, with the opening of the kitchen for quick meals and the pizzeria, it also became a reference point for Cagliari football fans who, arriving from all over the island, would stop at La Ruota d’Oro for a quick snack.
In the 80s, following a change in the layout of the state road, the structure underwent its final transformation into a full restaurant.
Today, under the management and guidance of his daughter Titty, La Ruota d’Oro is evolving once again: it is adapting to modern times by reducing the restaurant area to create a boutique accommodation with 5 rooms. In doing so, it has become a guest house and, in respect of the tradition established by its founder, it is now La Locanda d’Oro.
